Maintenance is Paramount
Given these challenges, a rigorous and proactive maintenance schedule for the radiator is non-negotiable.
Key Maintenance Tasks:
- Regular Cleaning: The radiator core must be cleaned frequently to remove salt deposits, dust, and debris. This is often done by carefully blowing compressed air from the engine side outwards (reverse of the airflow) or gently flushing with water (avoiding high pressure that can bend the fins).
- Inspection for Corrosion: Look for white, powdery deposits (aluminum corrosion) or green powdery deposits (copper corrosion). Early detection can allow for repairs before a leak develops.
- Coolant Check and Replacement: The coolant is not just water. It contains anti-corrosion inhibitors that protect the inside of the engine and radiator. These inhibitors deplete over time, especially in high-temperature operations. The coolant should be tested regularly and replaced according to the genset manufacturer’s schedule.
- Fan and Belt Inspection: Ensure the cooling fan is operating correctly and that the fan belts are tight and in good condition. A failed fan belt will lead to immediate overheating.
