| Shell and tube exchangers can be designed for almost any service. All other exchanger types are compared to shell and tube. Hairpin type exchangers are a good choice when one fluid is at a very high pressure. Hairpin exchangers are a good choice when there is a large difference in temperature between the two fluids. Plate and frame exchangers are a good choice for liquid-liquid exchangers when the operating pressure is low and a low pressure drop across the exchanger is not required. Plate and frame exchangers should not be used for hazardous or flammable fluids. Plate and frame exchangers should not be used in vacuum service.
