FRP COOLING TOWER

Definition:
An FRP Cooling Tower is a type of mechanical draft cooling tower where the primary structural casing, components like the cold water basin, and often the fill support structure are made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP).

FRP Material:

  • Composition: Glass fibers embedded in a polymer resin matrix (usually polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy).
  • Key Properties: High strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and low maintenance.

Types & Common Design:

  • Most commonly Induced Draft, Cross Flow or Counter flow designs.
  • Often modular, factory-assembled units (packaged towers) for easy installation.
  • Sizes range from small commercial units to large industrial modules.

Advantages of FRP Construction:

  1. Corrosion Resistance:
    1. Ideal for chemically aggressive environments (coastal salt air, chemical plants, treated water with additives).

Comparison with Other Materials:

  • vs. Wood: FRP does not rot, decay, or support microbial growth.
  • vs. Galvanized Steel: Superior corrosion resistance, but higher initial cost.
  • vs. Concrete: Much lighter and quicker to install, but not for giant power plant scale.

Maintenance Note:

  • Regular cleaning of fill and basin is still essential.
  • Inspect for cracks, delamination, or UV damage periodically.
