FILL CONFIGURATION & ORIENTATION

Based on Air/Water Flow:

  1. Crossflow Fill:
    1. Designed for horizontal airflow.
    1. Fill is typically vertical or slightly angled.
    1. Water drips down through the fill while air flows horizontally across it.
    1. Often uses splash fill or specially designed crossflow film fill.
  2. Counterflow Fill:
    1. Designed for vertical upward airflow.
    1. Fill blocks are stacked vertically.
    1. Water flows down while air flows up through the same passages.
  • Almost exclusively uses film fill for maximum efficiency.

Fill Block Geometry:

  • Corrugation Pattern: Angle, height, and spacing of the corrugations determine surface area, air pressure drop, and water distribution.
  • Flute Size: Smaller flutes = more surface area but higher fouling risk.
