This is the primary component where the actual cooling of the process fluid happens.

Finned-Tube Coils: A series of tubes (usually copper or stainless steel) with aluminum fins attached. The hot process fluid flows inside the tubes, and the pre-cooled air passes over the fins and tubes to carry away the heat. This circuit is completely closed.

This section is responsible for cooling the incoming air before it hits the coils.

Cooling Pads/Media: These are porous pads (often made of cellulose, PVC, or composite materials) mounted at the air inlets. Water is distributed over them, and their large surface area maximizes water contact with the incoming air for efficient evaporation.
Water Distribution System:
- Distribution Pipes & Nozzles: Pipes that run along the top of the cooling pads with spray nozzles that evenly distribute water over the pad surface.
- Water Pump: A centrifugal pump that circulates water from the sump to the distribution system.
Sump / Water Basin: A tank located at the bottom of the unit that collects the water that has passed through the pads. It acts as a reservoir for the recirculating water.
Water Level Control System: An automatic valve (often a float valve or solenoid valve) that maintains the proper water level in the sump by adding fresh make-up water to replace what is lost through evaporation and drift.
Overflow and Drain Connections: Essential for managing water levels during shutdown or maintenance and for preventing overflow.

Fans: Large, axial or centrifugal fans that create the airflow required for heat exchange. They draw or push air through the wet pads, across the coils, and out the top of the unit.
Fan Motors: Electric motors that drive the fans. These are often equipped with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to precisely control fan speed based on cooling demand, saving significant energy.
Fan Cylinders/Shrouds: Structures that direct airflow efficiently through the heat exchanger bundle and prevent recirculation of hot exhaust air.

Frame / Casing: The structural steel or aluminum framework that supports all the components and the exterior panels. It is designed to withstand environmental loads like wind.
Louvers / Inlet Screens: Located at the air inlets, often surrounding the cooling pads. They help protect the internal components from debris and direct airflow evenly.

Control Panel: Houses the programmable logic controller (PLC) or microprocessor that operates the entire system.
Sensors: Critical for efficient and safe operation:
- Fluid Temperature Sensors: Monitor the inlet and outlet temperature of the process fluid.
- Ambient Air Sensor: Measures outside air temperature.
- Freeze Stat Sensors: Protect the coil from freezing in cold weather.
- Sump Heater: Prevents the water in the sump from freezing.
- Vibration Switches / Sensors: Shut down the fan if excessive vibration is detected.
Alarms and Indicators: Provide warnings for low water level, high fluid temperature, pump failure, or fan failure.

Water Treatment System: While not always integrated into the unit itself, it is a critical

ancillary system. It adds chemicals to the sump water to control scale, algae, bacteria (like Legionella), and corrosion. This typically includes a dosing pump and a chemical reservoir.
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): As mentioned, for controlling fan and pump speed for optimal efficiency.
Dampers: Motorized dampers that can close the air inlets completely to prevent cold air from entering and freezing the core when the system is off in winter.
